Dog-friendly Element on display at the New York International Auto Show
The athlete-friendly Honda Element is now dog-friendly as well. Honda teamed up with Takata Corporation to produce a dog friendly concept, currently on display at the New York International Auto Show.
The back of the Element is transformed into a canine living room on wheels, with a cushioned pet bed, second-row and cargo area restraint systems, a rear ventilation fan, seat covers, floor mats, and a spill-resistant water bowl. A production version of the dog-friendly Element rolls out this Fall.
“In-vehicle pet restraints should be part of every dog owner’s safe travel practices,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States. “Good ventilation and access to water on longer trips should also be primary concerns.
The pet restraints also protect passengers, who could be injured by an unrestrained dog impacting them during a collision.
A ramp that stows underneath the dog bed platform helps dogs access the rear cargo area. The Element’s tall cargo area is ideal for dogs: its urethane floor is easy to clean. The Element’s low liftover height makes the cargo area easier to load than some competitive products.
The 2009 Element comes in three grades: LX, EX, and SC. Power comes from a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and either five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. Available all-wheel drive enhances wet-weather traction.
A refreshed exterior features a new front grille and bumpers, restyled front fenders, new headlamp and taillamps. The EX grade comes with the water-resistant urethane utility floor as well as a convertible storage console with removable cooler box.
