Expanded program adds driving instruction, tire safety demonstrations

At the Active Lifestyle Vehicle of the Year ride-and-drive program this year, athletes found themselves not only behind the wheel, but in the classroom and on the test track as part of an enhanced ALV event. ALV is the only car-of-the-year program that puts athletes behind the wheel, driving and voting on vehicles that best meet their lifestyles.

Two dozen automotive manufacturers entered more than 40 cars, trucks, minivans and sport and crossover utility vehicles in the seventh annual competition. Manufacturers can enter as many as two models in each of seven categories, ranging from value-priced “urban” vehicles to “green” ALVs and family cars with three rows of seating.

The two-part judging process involves elite athletes and a jury of fourteen nationally respected automotive journalists. Both groups drive and vote on the vehicle entries. The athletes and journalists have equal weight in the final tally.

This year, sponsorship from Tire Rack, the presenting sponsor, and Michelin gave athletes extra incentive by providing driver and tire safety instruction.

Formerly held in the fall in San Diego, this year the athletes’ ride-and-drive event moved to the Tire Rack headquarters in South Bend, Indiana. Tire Rack is the world’s largest independent tire retailer and its facility includes a purpose-built test track.

In addition to the athletes on hand, Tire Rack and Michelin welcomed public relations and products specialists from the auto manufacturers. The product specialists did vehicle walk-arounds and answered athletes’ questions about vehicle attributes, including the ease of loading and unloading everything from kayaks to kids.

The day began with each athlete going through a driving safety course offered by Tire Rack’s experts, and a tire safety demonstration by Michelin and Tire Rack that stressed the importance of maintaining proper tire air pressures.

Athletes also were reminded that tires are shoes for their vehicles.

“Whether you’re part of a team or an individual sport… chances are you’ll need to change the shoes on your vehicle just like you change the shoes on your feet,” said Tire Rack vice president Matt Edmonds. “Skiers wouldn’t wear dress shoes on the slopes, so the same should be said for their vehicles.”

Chicago and South Bend area athletes on hand for the program began the day in the classroom, learning some driving instruction tips from Tire Rack’s director of tire information John Rastetter. Following the classroom, athletes headed to the two-mile test track to hone their driving skills, and experience the difference tire inflation pressures make in a vehicle’s performance.

“Tire Rack’s ‘Drive to Survive’ defensive driving tech talk and track experience showcased how an athlete’s skills and concentration should remain active when they’re behind the wheel as well,” said Rastetter.

“The participants also learned a new respect for the tires on their vehicles, because it’s the tires that convert the vehicle’s horsepower into acceleration, chassis into handling and brakes into stopping power,” Rastetter continued. “It’s amazing what a total of about 80-square inches of tire contact with the road can do to control a 4000-pound vehicle.”

Athletes drove three laps of the track behind the wheel of BMW 3-Series sedans, vehicles Tire Rack maintains for its driving instruction programs. Michelin equipped the cars with HydroEdge tires. After learning the track in the first lap, athletes experienced the difference with the tires properly inflated and underinflated in the final two laps.

Program attendees also met Gunnar Jeannette, the youngest driver to ever complete the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Jeannette, whose American Le Mans Series cars run on Michelin tires, was a celebrity judge. At the welcome dinner for the event, Jeannette talked about his own active lifestyle, which includes parachuting and base jumping in between races.

“Michelin has long been dedicated to the mobility of products and people, so supporting athletes through the Active Lifestyle Vehicle program was a natural fit for us,” said Michelin motorsports manager, Silvia Mammone.

Michelin is a major original equipment producer of both automotive and bicycle tires.

“In competition of any kind, endurance is one of the keys to success and for us at Michelin, the longevity of our tires during an endurance race can mean the difference between a win or a loss,” Mammone continued.

“Our accomplishments on track are a testament to the superior performance… and overall confidence drivers experience when driving on Michelin tires and for athletes, that can mean bicycle tires as well as passenger and truck tires.”

At the ALV ride-and-drive, athletes give automakers insights on active lifestyle vehicles While ALV is called a competition, it’s actually a focus group on disguise. The purpose of putting athletes and product specialists together is to help automakers understand athletes’ unique lifestyle needs.

Runners, cyclists, paddlers and triathletes at the South Bend program evaluated each vehicle entry according to ergonomics, safety and cargo capabilities. After the static evaluation, athletes took vehicles on nine-mile road drive to assess ride and handling.

“Although I’ve been a juror since the start of ALV, this was my first experience as an attendee at the athlete’s ride-and-drive day,” said Larry Edsall, ALV jury chairman. “The athletes knew exactly what they want and need in a vehicle that meets their lifestyles- and that carries not only their gear but their families and friends. But I also think some of them were surprised that there were more vehicles- and vehicles of different sizes- that met those needs.”

Automotive jury members have until the end of October to send in their votes for the 2011 competition. Look for announcements of this year’s winners in early November.

    16. Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass favor.

    20. The very next time I read a blog, Hopefully it doesn’t fail me just as much as this particular one. I mean, Yes, it was my choice to read, however I truly thought you would probably have something helpful to say. All I hear is a bunch of moaning about something that you could possibly fix if you weren’t too busy seeking attention.
