Compact crossover is ideal for active urbanites

    By Nina Russin

    2011 Kia Sportage

While the newest Kia Sportage is vastly different than the 1996 model, its mission is similar. City dwellers will be attracted to the car’s compact proportions, spacious interior and available all-wheel drive.

Unlike the original body-on-frame truck, the 2011 Sportage is a unibody construction, intended primarily for on-road use. The car’s proportions have grown with each iteration, making the new Sportage considerably larger than the first-generation vehicle.

The Soul, introduced two years ago, is Kia’s sub-compact offering geared towards first-time buyers. The Sportage fills the middle ground between the Soul and larger Sorento, offering many of the same comfort and safety features as its mid-sized sibling.

There are two available four-cylinder engines: a 2.4-liter naturally-aspirated block available at roll-out, and a two-liter turbocharged engine in the sporty SX which arrives later.

The test car is the upscale EX grade priced from $23,295. The Sportage shares its six-speed automatic transmission with the Sorento.

A navigation package adds an audio upgrade with Sirius traffic updates and rearview camera display($1500).

A premium package includes heated front seats, keyless start, a two-panel panoramic sunroof, rear sonar, heated side mirrors and a cargo cover ($2500). The $895 destination charge brings the price as tested to $27,990, putting the Sportage in our best-value category.

    Four-cylinder engine extends fuel economy

    2011 Kia Sportage

Engineers tuned the 2.4-liter engine to offer spirited performance, while maintaining 31 mile-per-gallon highway fuel economy. Although I had driven the Sportage at a media event in San Francisco, I was anxious to see how the car would perform on my favorite test route east of Phoenix.

The new model’s tight chassis and peppy engine should make prospective buyers smile. The engine has plenty of low-end torque for acceleration off the line and in the 20-to50 mile-per-hour range drivers use merging onto the highway.

The six-speed transmission shifts smoothly with a minimum of shift shock. Drivers can select gears manually on challenging roads, eliminating the annoying hunting that can be the bane of four-cylinder engines.

I switched the transmission into manual mode on a rural road at the base of the Superstition Mountains, and was impressed by the throttle response on pitchy short hills. Despite keeping the engine revving in the 3000-4000 rpm range, I averaged just over 25 miles-per-gallon for my 100-mile test drive.

Steering feedback is excellent at all speeds, providing plenty of feedback for low-speed maneuvering and positive on-center response on the highway. A four-wheel independent suspension has stabilizer bars on both axles to keep the chassis flat in the corners.

Front-to-rear weight balance is surprisingly good for a front-wheel drive chassis. I noticed little tendency to understeer in decreasing radius turns.

A 34.7-foot turning radius makes it easy to parallel park the Sportage or do the occasional U-turn.

Standard 18-inch wheels and tires provide large contact patches with the road for better handling. Ground clearance is 6.8 inches. While the Sportage doesn’t have the four-wheel drive necessary for off-road trails, it works well on unimproved roads, and has enough ground clearance for moderate snow.

Standard downhill descent control limits car speed to five miles-per-hour on steep grades to help the driver maintain directional control. Four-wheel disc brakes stop the car in a firm, linear fashion.

Visibility to the front and sides of the car is quite good. I had no problems monitoring traffic to either side on the highway.

Due to the small rear glass, there are some large blind spots in the back corners and under the window. I’d strongly recommend the optional rear backup camera to those who can afford it. Lines superimposed over the camera image show the car’s trajectory according to steering inputs.

Interior quiet is impressive, with no obvious wind noise around the windshield or side mirrors. Engineers did an excellent job isolating passengers from road and engine noise as well.

    Versatile interior

    Kia Sportage Interior

Kia is consistent in its attention to detail. Tech-savvy buyers will appreciate standard 12-volt power points for recharging portable electronic devices, as well as auxiliary and USB ports.

Redundant steering wheel controls enable the driver to change audio channels and make phone calls with minimum distraction. The tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel allows smaller drivers to maintain a safe distance from the front airbag.

The optional panoramic sunroof brings an abundance of light inside the car. Dual overhead reading lamps up front and a dome lamp over the second row illuminate the interior at night.

All four doors have bottle holders large enough for 20-ounce bottles. Cupholders in the center console and a fold-down rear armrest are also good sized.

White-on-black gauges are easy to read in bright sunlight. Ditto for the navigation screen which also displays images for the rearview camera.

Graphics for the optional navigation system are easy to read. Details to the right of the split screen warn the driver of impending exits and turns. Sirius traffic updates saved me for getting stuck in congestion on a highway through Phoenix’s east valley due to a collision.

The car’s low floor tunnel maximizes legroom for the passenger in the second-row middle position. Because the Sportage has no rear air vents, second-row passengers might get warm in mid-summer.

    Bicycle friendly

The rear seats fold flat using releases on the seat backs to extend the cargo floor. The Kia Sportage easily meets our bicycle-friendly standards. Roof rails on the test car allows the owner to add a cargo carrier or bike rack up top.

The car’s low lift-over height makes it easier to load large cargo in back. An under-floor storage area has compartments to keep smaller items from shifting around and is invisible to prying eyes.

    Standard safety

All grades come with front, side and side curtain airbags, antilock braking, traction and electronic stability control. Hill start assist applies the brakes on steep grades to prevent the car from rolling backwards when the driver accelerates from a stop.

Optional keyless start allows the driver to enter the car and fire the ignition without removing the key fob from his pocket. The feature adds a measure of safety for drivers who leave work in the city after dark.

The 2011 Sportage is on display at Kia dealerships nationwide.

Likes: A versatile compact crossover vehicle with a high level of standard safety, comfort and convenience features. Kia’s standard 10 year/100,000 mile warranty includes five years of 24-hour roadside assistance, giving owners additional peace of mind.

Dislikes: Narrow rear glass creates large blind spots to the back. Lack of rear air vents can make the back of the car hot in the summer.

    2. Kia Sportage is a fairly sleek looking sports utility vehicle. Kia has been doing tons of promotions these months. Hope they might get there brand name together.

    3. Im impressed, I have to admit. Seldom do I come across a blog thats both equally educative and amusing, and let me tell you, youve hit the nail on the head. The problem is something which too few people are speaking intelligently about. Im very happy I came across this in my search for something regarding this.

    4. I was recommended this blog by my cousin. I am not sure whether this post is written by him as nobody else know such detailed about my trouble. Youre incredible! Thanks!

    7. Currently it sounds like Expression Engine is the preferred blogging platform available right now. (from what Ive read) Is that what youre using on your blog?

    8. Youre so cool! I do not believe I have read through something like this before. So nice to find someone with unique thoughts on this issue. Really.. thanks for starting this up. This website is one thing thats needed on the internet, someone with some originality!

    9. Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass favor.

All I hear is a bunch of complaining about something you could fix if you were not too busy looking for attention.
